June 2025 Meeting Minutes

6:30pm | Preservation Station | Bonnie Anderson presiding

APD Report

There was no APD representative at the meeting. In a phone conversation before the meeting, Brittany acknowledged the ongoing issues with the north Central railway underpass. Homeless people continue to use the tunnel as a bathroom, and it has not been cleaned as regularly as promised by the city. Carlos Michelen reported that the construction has removed old rail tracks. Terry Brunner informed him that there is a change in design as there will only be one ramp on the southside. The plan is now to complete the project in early 2026 and not the fall of 2025.

People have been living in a car with no license plate that is often parked around Edith and Iron. Lt. Tapia reported that it has been “red tagged” for towing. If anyone sees the car, report it to 242-COPS. Brittany Martinez asks that residents email her as well. Her email is brimartinez@cabq.gov.

Residents would like more traffic enforcement on Lead, Coal, Broadway and Central.

EDo Event

EDo is hosting “A Taste of EDo” from 3-8pm on Sunday, June 22. There is information on their website.

Possible Arson behind 206 Arno NE

Two residents reported that a fire in a garbage receptacle was put out by the Albuquerque Fire Department. The cause may have been a homeless person. It appears that no one witnessed the start of the fire. Our neighborhood is vulnerable to fires, as many homes are of wood construction. There have been firebugs in the neighborhood in the past. There is concern that a past perpetrator has returned. Keep an eye out for fires, especially in the alleyways behind homes. Residents using cameras in the alleys would be useful in capturing arsonists.

Freeway Expansion

We continue to stress the association’s opposition to the project. RethinkI25.org has over 600 signatures. KOB and KRQE have reported the concerns that the construction will be long and messy. A PowerPoint presentation was shown to the contracted engineers. The planners have cancelled the last public input meeting; therefore, they will be making their final decisions without any additional public input.

Opponents of I-25 straightening and expansion continue to stress facts. Highway expansion doesn’t fix traffic, it increases it. Straightening will make the highway faster; faster highways mean more noise and an increase in the number and severity of accidents. Carlos related that California and Colorado no longer will permit highway expansion, with climate concerns and additional factors of noise, congestion and safety issues.

The fight continues. Councilman Baca has indicated he will support the Rethink I-25 coalition.
