May 2026 Meeting Minutes

6:30pm | Preservation Station | Bonnie Anderson presiding

Board vacancy

Glen Luppnow and Birgitta Gabel will share the seat left by the resignation of Ruth Lantry.

Jane’s Walk review

Krista and Bob reviewed the successful participation of about 25 people at each of the two walks through Arno and Edith. The script for the Walk was created by past members of the Board and recently revised by Bob Elwood, based on research done at the Special Collections Library. Ann Carson shared some history related to homes having two front doors, a topic that was raised on one of the Walks. Thanks to the Artichoke for hosting the kick off for each walk.

July 5 event

The July 1 Board meeting is canceled so that Board members can attend a new event on July 5: Red, White, and Blueberries. In honor of our nation’s 250th birthday, neighbors are invited to attend a discussion aimed at sharing ideas related to neighborhood vitality. The event is from 4 – 6 pm and people are invited to bring snacks to share. Prizes will be given for the most patriotic snacks. Location TBD.

City grant for neighborhoods

Krista volunteered to respond to the City’s offering of grants for neighborhood projects. She suggested we apply for funds to cover our two major events, the annual meeting in August and holiday party in December.

Pin Curbs on Central

There was extended discussion on a request from EDo to support their efforts to have the City remove the pin curbs on both sides of the ART lane on Central. The EDo request was based on vehicles having accidents running into the pin curbs and, though unspoken, the difficulty of patrons making turns on Central to access businesses. Many neighbors who lived on or near Central explained that traffic had slowed significantly since the construction of the pin curbs discouraged drivers from using the ART lane as a passing lane to travel faster. In addition, drivers no longer used Arno crossing at Central as a thoroughfare. Further, cars no longer hit ART buses by making illegal turns across the ART lane. While neighbors understood that business owners were not pleased with limited access to their commercial properties, that access was limited by the installation of the ART lane, not the pin curbs. Carlos volunteered to condense our arguments in favor of maintaining the pin curbs in a letter to the City that would be copied to the EDo board.

Central overpass

There was a brief discussion of progress on the West and East sides of the pedestrian overpass on Central at the railroad tracks. Progress is slow.

City Council vote on sitting/sleeping on sidewalks

While the City has not yet designated zones to be affected by enhanced enforcement of no sleeping or prolonged sitting on sidewalks aimed at the homeless, there was discussion about how our neighborhood might be affected. Several voiced concern that this was not a solution to the basic problem of lack of affordable housing.
