Election of Officers

The following officers were elected for 26-27:

·       President – Bonnie Anderson

·       Vice-President – Moises Gonzales

·       Treasurer – Salley Trefethen

·       Secretary – Krista Smith

Overpass at Central and RR Tracks

Carlos discussed the ongoing delay with the overpass and the difficulties for residents who need access to Downtown.  He read a draft letter to the City, summarizing the issues, and the Board voted approval.  One neighbor suggested that the letter be sent to the EDo president, David Tanner, to see if they wanted to co-sign, before we send it to the City.

Broadway Restriping

Moises reviewed the history of the Broadway road diet and ongoing delays over several years.  The City will be presenting a status report at the September 21 meeting of the EDo board and neighbors suggested that we wait until after that presentation to write a letter to the City.  Moises, also a member of the EDo board, will report back at our October 7 meeting.

Website Maintenance

Salley requested approval to spend $228 for the annual fee for our website.  She explained how our social media platforms compliment the website which houses our minutes, bylaws, and other important news.  We also pay annual domain fees for both “HHHDA” and “Huning Highlands.” The Board approved the request.

State Historic Preservation Conference

We have been invited to participate in the October 2027 State Historic Preservation Conference at UNM.  Volunteers who are interested in leading a presentation or a neighborhood tour should contact Bonnie.

Budgets for Upcoming Events

After a brief discussion about past fund-raising events like Dickens of a Dinner and Mother’s Day Home Tours, the Board approved budgets of $200 for the Spooky Pumpkin Carving Contest and $1100 for the Holiday Party at the Press Club.  It was noted that last year, the cost for both events was significantly offset by donations from generous neighbors.

Crime Watch Team

At a recent neighborhood discussion, it was noted that some of us don’t always feel safe.  As a result, we are planning to form a team of about 10 “reporters” who are scattered across the neighborhood and will report any criminal activity they see to both the City and an internal text group.  Others on the team will then report the same incident to the City, thus amplifying the impact on police statistics.  We have been told over and over by officers who visit our meetings that the police use those statistics to determine how to allocate resources among areas of the City.  We need volunteers who are home most of the time (retired or work from home) from every section of Huning Highlands.  Howard was the security team advisor for a similar effort in Palm Beach, Florida, and might be a great resource for this team.  Volunteers should contact Bonnie with their name and street address.
